The husband has come through with another great Husband Hack for me to post! Life has been really busy here, especially as soon as that hot weather hit us. We are currently in the middle of a heat wave warning for Western Canada, so have been trying to soak up as much hot summer goodness as possible! Summers in Canada are incredibly short, so any day we can be outside, we will take it.

So, this Husband Hack is at least a week or so late in terms of where it was supposed to end up in my editorial calendar. Oh well. Life.

If you missed the last couple Husband Hacks, you can get to them here:

  1. elevated instant ramen noodles; and

I also just realized that ALL of this year’s Husband Hacks are food-related. Then I stepped back and came to an even bigger realization that I really do not cook much for my family! My husband handles most (dare I say all?) of that, and while I am grateful, I think I need to step up my game.

Growing up, my mother-in-law would soak bread slices in eggs and fry on a skillet for a quick snack. So this is where my husband starts from with his french toast recipe. He adds milk to the eggs (like any typical french toast recipe), and this results in “fluffier” bread than back in the days when his mom used to prepare this for him.

The husband is really proud of his super simple french toast recipe. It’s quick, easy and delicious.

It’s All About the Bread!

Our go-to bread is light rye bread and for convenience, we use this bread for the french toast. Due to its density, there is no worry that the french toast will be soggy! Maybe also the fact that it’s not a wheat-based bread? I don’t know. I’m only speculating on that last fact. If anyone knows for sure that a wheat-based bread produces soggier french toast, do let me know!

Wanna Know A Secret?…

The secret to my husband’s super simple french toast recipe is the peanut butter he spreads onto each piece before topping with syrup! At first I thought it was odd. But then I tried a piece with peanut butter on it and it changed my world! It’s seriously delicious, and that extra kick of protein can’t hurt.

Besides the peanut butter, we top our french toast with a light sprinkle of powdered sugar, cinnamon, fresh strawberries, and a drizzle of agave syrup. I do prefer the agave syrup over maple syrup, but either is yummy.

    1. Please do give it a try! And don’t forget the peanut butter on it. That is definitely the secret that kicks this up a notch!

  2. Love that this is made with rye! We have always used texas toast! Will definitely have to try this

    1. Yes! I think Texas Toast is kind of the standard used for French Toast recipes. The rye makes for a heartier texture AND we never have to be worried about soggy toast!
